Irony has found a novel pin-up: Kate Middleton is the new queen of hipsters. The same kids who threw royal wedding parties — eating cucumber sandwiches, dancing under Union Jack bunting in Oxfam wedding dresses in east London bars — are getting in on her pregnancy too. Artists are making kitsch “Shake, Rattle & Rule” Royal Morning Sickness sick bags, and trannies are throwing baby showers, counting down to club nights themed around the birth of the royal sprog.

East London — capital of cool and home of the hipster — is a landscape infected by irony. Where restaurants are called Canteen, shops called Shop, international youth
